Medvedev defeats long-time rival Tsitsipas to reach Shanghai Masters quarterfinals

Daniil Medvedev is back in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-4, 7-5, in the latest chapter of their combustible rivalry. The fifth-seeded Medvedev became only the fourth player, after Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, to reach the last eight of this tournament in three straight years.

There was little drama this time. The two have had verbal flare-ups in previous meetings, including in the 2022 Australian Open semifinals.

Jodar Rallies Again

Earlier, Rafael Jodar also reached the quarterfinals after losing the first set for the third straight match. The 20-year-old Spaniard beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2. He had previously come back to beat Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round and Jiri Lehecka in the third round.

The 12th-seeded Jodar, who received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct during the match, will next face Casper Ruud. Ruud advanced after fourth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime retired with a suspected knee injury while trailing 5-2 in the first set.

Paul Next for Medvedev

Tommy Paul won 7-6(5), 6-4 against Zizou Bergs, who had beaten Carlos Alcaraz on Monday. Paul will play Medvedev in his next match.

Top Half Quarterfinals Set

The top-half quarterfinal lineup was set on Tuesday. Top seed Alexander Zverev will face Alex de Minaur, and Arthur Gea will play Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
